MiQ, the global leader in methane emissions measurement and certification, had a momentous year in 2024 against a backdrop of mounting market and regulatory pressure on the oil and gas industry to reduce methane leakage.
A Year of Global Achievements
MiQ made significant progress in driving transparency and accountability in global methane emissions, expanding its operations outside of North America and certifying LNG for the first time. Key developments include:
- Certification of Grain LNG: MiQ certified Europe’s largest LNG terminal, enabling buyers to select LNG cargoes based on verified methane emissions data. This milestone exemplifies the growing market preference for emissions transparency.
- Facilitated international partnerships: Collaborating with US natural gas producer EQT Corporation and European energy supplier Uniper, MiQ facilitated a pilot transaction for independently certified LNG. This pilot transaction was made possible using the MiQ Supply Chain Protocol, which constructs complete supply chain emission profiles using accepted Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) principles and Data Quality Indicators (DQIs).
- Commitment from Commonwealth LNG to certify LNG offtake: Supported by Kimmeridge, Commonwealth LNG committed to independent certification of their natural gas operations, including LNG offtake.
Demand for emissions transparency underpinned by regulatory and market shifts
In 2024, market and regulatory developments helped to accelerate demand for transparency on emissions from natural gas imports:
- The EU’s formal adoption of new rules on methane emission means producers have until January 2027 to meet EU requirements. MiQ certification is the only benchmark which currently meets the EU’s requirements for measurement-based reporting and third-party verification, enabling producers to be regulatory compliant today.
“2024 has shown that market and regulatory pressures are creating unprecedented demand for methane transparency,” said Georges Tijbosch, CEO of MiQ. “MiQ is uniquely positioned to bridge this gap with credible third-party verified data that enables real emissions reductions. In 2025, we are doubling down on our mission to help the industry and governments take meaningful steps to tackle methane leakage.”
MiQ Board Chair Bryan Fisheradded: “Despite global commitments to reduce methane emissions, levels continue to rise. MiQ’s efforts in 2024 demonstrate that change is achievable through enhanced transparency and accountability. In 2025, we are optimistic as more stakeholders collaborate with us to develop a measurable, market-driven approach to methane reduction.”
A Vision for 2025 and Beyond
Looking ahead, MiQ is poised to:
- Expand the adoption of methane certification across key markets including in the US and the EU, ensuring greater supply chain emissions transparency globally.
- Collaborate with policymakers to integrate MiQ’s data-driven solutions into regulatory frameworks, maximizing their impact on emissions reductions.
- Launching innovative tools to enhance the accuracy and accessibility of emissions data, including Methane Scout, which is a first-of-its-kind tool for natural gas buyers and producers to analyze and verify GHG emissions throughout the natural gas supply chain.
- Following certification pilots of crude oil production last year, we are looking to announce the certification of a crude oil production facility this year.
