MiQ welcomes that the Network of Competent Authorities under the leadership of the Commission has identified certification as a pragmatic compliance solution for the EU Methane Regulation’s importer requirements and that the December 15th EU Energy Council supports certification as compliance solution.
MiQ is a non-for-profit organization with the mission to incentivize methane emission reductions from gas and oil operations across the world, based on a robust certification scheme. MiQ-recognized third-party verifiers audit producer data based upon the MiQ measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) standard, which can be assessed as equivalent to the terms set out in the EU regulation. MiQ is fully operational and is already certifying 25% of U.S. natural gas production. MiQ is starting certification of crude oil operations and certification outside the U.S. in the coming months.
MiQ will continue to support work by industry, authorities and the Commission on establishing producer-level certification as a pragmatic compliance solutions that can be implemented within existing market frameworks and without endangering secure energy supplies or impacting affordability. MiQ is piloting certification with EU importers and their authorities early 2026.
