MiQ welcomes the alignment of all key gas and oil industry associations in Europe on principles for solutions addressing the challenge for EU importers to comply with the EU Methane Regulation when they cannot identify the producer of the imported gas or oil.
If recognized by authorities, these principles can set the basis to provide legal certainty for importers to conclude supply agreements, ensuring energy security to the EU and continued market functioning, whilst incentivising methane measurement and mitigation at scale.
MiQ‘s measurement, reporting, and verification standards and its methane performance certification scheme are well-established and widely used by industry for years. In addition, MiQ’s new controlled inter-regional transfer of certificates meets the criteria set out by the Industry Coalition, providing a pragmatic and implementable market-based compliance solution and incentivizing methane emission reductions by producers globally.
MiQ is testing with industry and authorities the use of its certification scheme as compliance solutions and is engaging with stakeholders with the aim of achieving formal recognition and the needed certainty to industry.
