What does Leonardo da Vinci have to do with MiQ certification?

Georges Tijbosch, CEO, & Sunny Uberoi, Head of Public Affairs

The PBS documentary currently airing in the US on Leonardo da Vinci showcases his remarkable insights across science, engineering, and the arts, featuring the quote, “Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.”  This philosophy is especially relevant to the oil and gas industry – pledges alone are insufficient; we need urgent action to reduce methane emissions.

MiQ certification

MiQ is a global non-profit organization established to facilitate a rapid reduction in methane emissions from the oil and gas sector. It provides a credible and transparent certification system that provides the data needed to ensure accountability and drive improvements.

Key features of MiQ Certification include:

  • Third-Party Verification: Independent auditors assess methane emissions performance based on robust criteria, including methane intensity, monitoring technology deployment, and company practices.
  • Universal Applicability: The MiQ certification is designed to be adopted globally and by governments and regulators. Its universal design means it could be used to demonstrate compliance with the EU’s new methane regulations.
  • Tradeable Certificates: MiQ certificates can be traded on global marketplaces, enhancing liquidity.

A Nod to da Vinci’s Wisdom

Da Vinci’s emphasis on action aligns with MiQ’s theory of change.  We know how to reduce oil and gas methane emissions, but the forcing mechanisms to drive action have been missing.

By independently certifying the methane emissions of natural gas production, MiQ provides the data that natural gas buyers and sellers need to choose lower-emission gas. However, data alone isn’t enough. MiQ’s approach transforms knowledge into action by creating a market for differentiated natural gas where prices can vary according to methane emissions performance. This provides the incentives needed to drive industry-wide improvements. Buyers can, therefore, purchase gas based on price, flexibility, credit terms and, crucially, emissions!

Learning from Leonardo da Vinci’s Legacy

Leonardo was a master at turning knowledge into action, blending creativity with practicality. His work shows us how to move from understanding to doing—an approach that is just as vital today, especially when tackling environmental challenges.

MiQ certification goes beyond simply raising awareness about methane emissions. It drives meaningful action by creating a market-based solution that drives change. As we confront global challenges, da Vinci’s timeless lesson reminds us that knowledge is powerful, but it’s action that truly makes a difference.
