Why MiQ is a Not-for-Profit

MiQ has one simple mission: drive rapid reductions in methane emissions from the oil and gas sector.

We’ve been focused on that mission since 2020, when we created a robust, data-informed grading system to certify oil and gas according to its methane emissions. Independent auditors carry out these assessments, providing the credible data needed to inform methane reduction efforts.

Importantly, our certification system only works if it is trusted. Governments, regulators, operators, investors, and end-users need confidence that the data we provide is accurate and free from commercial influence.

That’s why we operate as a not-for-profit, with no shareholders and no commercial stake in the outcome of any certification.

MiQ was originally launched as a partnership between RMI (formerly the Rocky Mountain Institute) and global sustainability consultancy SYSTEMIQ. Today, we continue to be supported by philanthropic organisations that share our goal of reducing emissions from the oil and gas sector and accelerating the transition to a clean energy future.

We have no conflicts of interest. We have no financial interest in any operator, auditor, or methane technology provider, and we do not benefit when an operator receives a particular grade. Not all initiatives can make the same claim.

We charge fees for our service independent of the outcome. This approach aligns with other widely trusted schemes, including ISCC, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), I-REC, and many others.

Our independence and integrity are non-negotiable.

And that’s why we’re seeing a growing interest in our certification system to inform emissions reductions and ensure accountability. Just last year, the International Energy Agency highlighted the role certification can play in reducing methane emissions across the natural gas supply chain. Our certification scheme provides a pragmatic solution to the EU Methane Regulations and is expected to be recognised as equivalent by authorities.

Today, our certification system is used across the US, Canada, the UK, the Netherlands, Japan, and the European Union. More than 30% of U.S. natural gas production and over 7% of global gas supply is now independently certified by MiQ. Crude certification was launched in 2026 for US offshore.

Our long-term success means eliminating avoidable methane emissions from oil and gas production. When that is achieved, our mission will be complete.

Until then, we will continue to work with governments, regulators, industry, and civil society to drive change on methane.
